The Hummingbird debuted in 1960 as Gibson's first square-shoulder model. While typically spruce and mahogany, this is a rare example featuring maple for the sides and back.
—Hummingbird and Dove
This instrument features beautiful figured maple for the sides and back instead of mahogany. This relates to the Dove, which began production in 1962. At the time, the Dove, introduced as the top-of-the-line model, was priced 35% higher than the Hummingbird. This led to the Hummingbird remaining extremely popular even after 1962, with demand outpacing production. As a result, there's an anecdote that Dove bodies, which shared the same dimensions, were repurposed for the Hummingbird.
The top features fine-grained spruce with a cherry sunburst finish.
The pickguard features a design depicting butterflies flying around flowers and a hummingbird sipping nectar. The line art is colored in yellow.
The rosewood fingerboard features double parallelogram inlays.
The mahogany neck has a thinner profile reminiscent of the 60s, offering a comfortable grip. There is some paint chipping visible on the 2nd to 3rd frets, but it is minimal and does not interfere with playability.
The bridge utilizes rosewood from the upper belly and features an adjustable saddle.
The headstock features Gibson's modern logo, complemented by a crown inlay that adds a touch of luxury.
The tuning machines have been replaced with Kluson-style ones. However, to maintain the original appearance, they feature gold plate with keystone buttons.
What do you think? The Hummingbird with a maple top is also a rare find, typically only seen around 1962-63. While there are some minor dents and scratches, aside from that, it's a beautiful example that retains its lovely cherry color despite being over 60 years old. If you're interested, please give it a try!
