“Calicchio,” a manufacturer based on the U.S. West Coast.
It’s a brand that has been favored by many legendary players, including Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Findley, and Jerry Hey.
While various manufacturers have released wonderful models inspired by Calicchio, I imagine there are still many players who remain captivated by the original Calicchio’s rugged design and overwhelmingly rich, full sound—and continue to use them to this day.
At Kubokan, we often hear from such players asking, “I’d like to replace some wear-and-tear parts, but…”
While we had been replacing felt, cork, and water key springs, the biggest hurdle was replacing the piston springs in Calicio’s signature “external spring” system.
Despite repeated trial and error using products from other manufacturers designed for flugelhorns, we couldn’t find a commercially available product that quite fit the bill.
Consequently, the Kubokan Custom Club set out to manufacture these piston springs.
After several months of trial and error, we successfully reproduced piston springs for the Calicchio based on our original stainless steel springs, which feature a slightly barrel-shaped design.
