"Calicchio," a manufacturer from the U.S. West Coast.
It’s a brand beloved by many masters, including Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Findley, and Jerry Hay.
While various manufacturers have released wonderful models inspired by Calicchio, I imagine there are still many who remain captivated by the original Calicchio’s rugged design and overwhelmingly rich, full-bodied sound, and continue to use them to this day.
KubokanWe often hear from such players asking, “I’d like to replace some consumable parts…”
Although we were able to replace felt, cork, and water key springs,the biggest hurdlewasreplacing the piston springs in Calicchio’s signature “external spring” system.
We experimented repeatedly with products from other manufacturers intended for flugelhorns, but we couldn’t find a commercially available product that truly met our needs.
So, the Kubokan Custom Club set out to create a piston spring.
After several months of trial and error, we successfully recreated the piston springs for the Calicchio based on our original stainless steel springs, which feature a slightly barrel-shaped design.
