(Updated January 9, 2024)
Currently, the “BLUESERIES” SUSTAINOR is out of stock and awaiting restock. We expect new stock to arrive sometime in January. Since each item is handmade one by one, production is limited to small batches, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Here, we’re publishing a Q&A addressing the questions we most frequently receive regarding the “BLUESERIES” SUSTAINOR.
Q. Is this a sound emulator, or what’s commonly called a simulator?
A. No. Every model in the BLUESERIES is a clone (analog specification) meticulously engineered by thoroughly analyzing the original equipment and recreating the exact same sound using modern technology and components.
Q. Is this a limited-edition product?
A. Yes. These are strictly limited-edition products. Sales will end once inventory is depleted.
Q. Where are they manufactured?
A. Japan. Since each unit is handcrafted domestically, production is limited to small batches, and new stock arrives sporadically. We apologize for any inconvenience caused if the product is sold out.
Q. Does the SUSTAINOR work with a standard AC adapter or a commercially available power supply?
A. While the unit is designed to work with a standard 9V center-negative AC adapter, it consumes a significant amount of power during operation. We have received numerous reports that some existing AC adapters lack sufficient capacity and fail to operate the unit properly. Therefore, we strongly recommend using the dedicated AC adapter “GBL-DC1000” separately. Please note that if you are using multiple Effectors with a single power supply, the power supply’s capacity may be insufficient, potentially causing the units to malfunction.
Q. Does the SUSTAINOR run on alkaline batteries?
A. Yes. It will operate, but the runtime is effectively about 10 minutes (using new alkaline batteries). Please consider this as a means to prevent a sudden loss of power in an emergency, such as if the AC adapter or DC cable becomes disconnected during a live performance or a show.
Q. What does the “GATE” function do?
A. Unlike typical noise gates, this unit’s noise gate is designed to activate at frequencies close to noise and does not block all frequency bands. This feature faithfully replicates the functionality of the original SUSTAINOR unit. The trigger knob adjusts the signal level fed into the gate; as you turn it clockwise, the gate will activate at lower signal levels. (The gate functions even when the knob is at the 0 position, and the LED will light up accordingly.)
Q. Can it be used as a preamp or in a line configuration?
A. Yes. It’s designed to deliver a flawless sound even when played through a line, so you can connect it directly to your DAW and record that sound. It offers a sound unique to fully analog circuits—one that can never be replicated by a plugin. Of course, it also performs exceptionally well when used as a preamp by plugging it into an amp’s return jack.
Q. If I have the GENERATOR, do I still need the SUSTAINOR?
A. While the GENERATOR is a model specialized for distortion, the SUSTAINOR features a two-channel design with both a distortion channel and a clean channel—and you can switch between them at any time—so it’s perfectly possible to use them together.
Q. Will the BLUESERIES continue?
A. Yes. While we can’t provide any specific details yet, as long as there is demand from our customers, we intend to explore every possibility and continue developing new models.
What did you think? We hope this has helped answer at least some of the questions you’ve been wondering about. We’re also happy to answer any other questions you may have, so please feel free to contact Sano at our store.
The “BLUESERIES” project—walking alongside you all! Please look forward to our next update!!

Thank you for your continued support of GOAT products!
We have received questions regarding the noise gate function built into this unit, so we would like to provide an explanation.
Unlike typical noise gates, this unit’s noise gate is designed to activate at frequencies close to noise and does not block all frequency bands.(This design follows the original functionality of the ROCKMAN SUSTAINOR.)
The trigger knob adjusts the signal level fed into the gate; as you turn it clockwise, the gate will activate at lower signal levels. (The gate functions even when the knob is at the 0 position, and the LED will light up accordingly.)
I think this is a truly unique gate function! Please give it a try!!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sano at our store.

What kind of sound does the ROCKMAN SUSTAINOR produce? https://youtu.be/h0eigtZd1Xc
Sano, GOAT “BLUESERIES” Project Team
(Updated November 7, 2023)
Finally! The prototype is finally complete!
It was already shaping up quite nicely, but our goal wasn’t just “nice”—it was the absolute best. It was the perfect recreation of “that sound.”
Even as the development team looked on in exasperation, asking, “Are you still at it!?”… our journey continued. Thanks to those efforts, we’ve finally reached this day, this moment. I still can’t contain my excitement.

It was already a very high-quality product to begin with—a flawless sound by the standards of a typical distortion pedal—but we couldn’t compromise on Rockman’s distinctive “knock-knock” compression feel or that unique frequency range—that “koo” sound—so characteristic of that era. We’ve managed to achieve just that.
When it comes to sustainers, it’s not just about distortion—clean tone is essential too! We struggled a lot to get the balance right between distortion and clean. Whenever we tried to emphasize one, it affected the other… But rather than prioritizing one over the other, both had to be “that sound.”
Honestly, if it were just the distortion, I probably could have finished it much sooner. But that alone wasn’t enough. Without that clean tone, it wouldn’t be a Sustainer. And today! That vision has finally come to fruition.
Another appealing feature of the Sustainer is that it functions as a preamp. This was also crucial. While analyzing the circuitry, I came to the conclusion that Tom Scholz likely aimed for a sound that could be used when plugged into a mixing console. If that’s the case, the fact that he was thinking about this back then is nothing short of astonishing.
This unit has been crafted to the same standard—yes, it delivers a flawless sound even when played through a line input. This is great news for DTM users as well. You can connect it directly to your DAW and record with that exact sound. Here you’ll find a sound unique to a fully analog circuit—one that absolutely cannot be replicated by a plugin. Of course, it also shines when plugged into an amp’s return jack!

I can’t wait to let you all hear this sound!
After this, I’ll be heading to a studio to record some footage for a video.
I hope to share an update on that progress in my next post.
We’ll announce the release date at a later time.

(Updated September 26, 2023)
We finally received a prototype from the development team and conducted a sound check!
Last time, we only had the circuit board, but now that the actual enclosure is complete, the sound brings it all to life!
The sound has been significantly upgraded from the circuit board sample.
It’s almost on par with the original! In fact, some are even saying, “Is it really impossible to tell them apart?” Everyone was so excited by the incredible result that we wanted to release it right away, but there was one small flaw…
We won’t compromise!
The debate got heated between those who wanted to release it quickly since the sound was already this good, and those who insisted that, precisely because we’d come this far, we had to finish it as a product with absolutely no compromises! If you’re reading this, I’m sure you can guess which conclusion we reached. We’re really almost there. We can’t wait to share this sound with all of you. Please hang in there just a little longer.

Here’s some fresh-off-the-press progress update for today. The PCB sample for our new product, the “SUSTAINOR,” is finally complete, so we gave it a test run!!

During the meeting, we discussed the sound while actually blasting it at full volume.
We’re expecting an even better PCB to arrive next time! We can’t wait for you all to hear the actual sound for yourselves.

(Updated July 27, 2023)
“I want to use a ROCKMAN! But the originals are expensive, and I’m worried about maintenance and breakdowns. Plus, the rack-mount type won’t fit on my Effector board.” We’ve received many such concerns from users.
The GOAT “BLUESERIES” project was born to address these concerns, and so far we’ve released three models: “GENERATOR (DISTORTION),” “STEREO CHORUS,” and “STEREO ECHO.”
We recruited project members who are also ROCKMAN enthusiasts and set out to find a way to make ROCKMAN as easy to use as a standard pedal—all while ensuring it’s MADE IN JAPAN.
*More compact and easier to use than the original models!

And now, we’re taking on the challenge of recreating the “SUSTAINOR”—something that has long been considered impossible.
The “SUSTAINOR” is a true all-rounder, equipped with a noise gate and capable of everything from ferocious high-gain distortion to crystal-clear clean tones.
We absolutely want that sound! How can we make it easier to use? We’re currently searching for the answer!
There have been numerous ROCKMAN-style models released to date. We believe that it’s precisely because of our track record with the GOAT “BLUESERIES” project that we can make this a reality.

What did you think of the last video?
To be honest, it had been a while since I’d played the actual instrument myself, so it felt quite refreshing and I really enjoyed it.
From the texture of the distortion to the superb clean sound, I was reminded once again just how amazing the SUSTAINOR really is! Personally, I think it embodies the guitar sound that symbolizes 1980s American rock.
Now, I’d like to share with you a look at the internal circuit board of the SUSTAINOR, which is currently under development!!

The components are packed in there, aren’t they! Here’s what the LED looks like when the switch is turned on and off!
I’m hoping that everyone who’s purchased one will enjoy comparing it to the real SUSTAINOR—or maybe even have fun playing BOSTON songs at home. That’s what I’m imagining, anyway.

I took another chance to play the ROCKMAN SUSTAINOR this time!
Unlike the DISTORTION GENERATOR, the SUSTAINOR is essentially a 2-channel unit, so you can switch between, for example, Channel 1 for distorted sounds and Channel 2 for clean sounds. Plus, it’s packed with features like SMART GATE to reduce noise!
In particular, the clean sounds—Clean 1 (including semi-clean) and Clean 2—are unique to this SUSTAINOR! As we develop new products, we’re especially committed to perfecting these sounds!
I can’t wait for the prototype to be completed!!

Right now, our engineering team is working tirelessly to make sure we can finally release the SUSTAINOR...
So, we’ve just received some special news straight from the development team, and we’d like to share it with you today, May 10 (GOAT Day)!!
We previously mentioned that the circuit board was nearly complete, but
but finally! Here’s a photo of the circuit board!
What do you think? Just looking at the sheer number of components crammed into such a small space really drives home just how challenging this development has been!
Since it’s still in testing, we haven’t been able to test the sound yet or show you everything clearly, but just looking at this photo sparks endless imagination—like, “What kind of distortion will it have?” or “What about the clean sound?”!!
The entire BLUESERIES project team is incredibly excited!!

(Updated May 2, 2023)
We’ve just received a report from the development team that the SUSTAINOR circuit board is nearly complete!!!

In terms of standard usage, the DISTORTION GENERATOR functions more as a drive pedal, while the SUSTAINOR serves as a preamp.
The SUSTAINOR features a compressor for adjusting input gain and is equipped with a Smart Gate (noise gate). It offers two types of distortion and two types of clean tones; in particular, many users find the sparkling, Electric Acoustic-style clean tone of “Clean 2” soothing, making it a popular model even today.

Diagram of the DISTORTION/FILTERS section of the original ROCKMAN SUSTAINOR
The SUSTAINOR currently under development can be considered the ultimate model in the “BLUESERIES,” which brings together the three models released so far (GOAT GENERATOR, STEREO CHORUS, and STEREO ECHO).
What’s more, since the DISTORTION GENERATOR and SUSTAINOR each have their own distinct distortion sounds, they’re the kind of models that drive gear enthusiasts wild—because you simply can’t reproduce those sounds without the actual unit.
I’m torn between anxiety over whether we can actually pull this off and the eagerness to let you all hear the sound as soon as possible!
Please look forward to our next update!!

Here’s some new information on the GOAT “BLUESERIES”!!
Last time, we told you that we had actually taken the SUSTAINOR apart and were in the process of analyzing it...
Right now, we’re really struggling with the circuit design!

This is proving to be quite a challenge.

How do we fit a circuit with this many features into a pedal-sized unit?! The excitement never ends!
The project is already well on its way to becoming a reality!

Stay tuned for the next update on the GOAT “BLUESERIES.”
===========================================================
(April 1, 2023)
The next release in the GOAT “BLUESERIES” is
"SUSTAINOR"!!!

*This is a concept illustration; specifications and design are subject to change.
The “SUSTAINOR,” released in the late 1980s, is known for its distinctive sound that created a unique world—a sound that amazed many guitarists. However, even though we know its value, the rack-mount design isn’t necessarily the most user-friendly. Furthermore, there are fewer and fewer working units left, and even current owners have confided that they’re “worried about when it might break.”
So we came up with an idea.
We wanted to make it easily accessible to everyone. And to eliminate the hassles of rack-mounted gear, we decided we had to create a compact pedal that anyone could use with ease.
It’s been over 30 years since its release, but
has anyone ever successfully recreated the ROCKMAN SUSTAINOR in a way that truly satisfied users?
There may have been electronically simulated versions in the past, but in an era without circuit diagrams, disassembling the actual unit, taking it apart, tracing the wiring from the input one by one to verify the components, and performing an accurate circuit analysis is a mind-boggling task in itself.
The only people we can entrust with this task are the Japanese engineers who handled the analysis for the GENERATOR. This time, they’ve somehow understood our vision, and we’ve received word that they’re currently hard at work on it.

The project is already well on its way to becoming a reality!
The “BLUESERIES” project—a journey we’ll take together with all of you! Please stay tuned for more updates.
