Precision" was the world's first solid-body electric bass. The first model change came in 1954 with the transition to a comfort body and the introduction of a sunburst finish. The final model change in 1957 and 1962 led to the final model.
The 1957 model change was the introduction of split pickups. These tiny 1 "x2" pickups, still in use today, were installed in pairs, one for the 1st and 2nd strings and the other for the 3rd and 4th strings, so that two pole pieces were assigned to each string. This allows the bass pickups to catch the movement of the bass strings, which are subject to high vibrations, and the two sets of pickups have opposite coils and magnets with opposite poles. The Precision Bass was almost complete with these pickups, and then the finish, pickguard, and other minor changes were made, culminating in the adoption of rosewood fretboards and the establishment of the tensioning method.
This is an early 1983 vintage series model, a reissue of the highly perfected 1957 model. The Custom Shop had not yet started, and it was released as practically the top-of-the-line model. The factory itself was made in Fullerton, a factory that is now gone. The sound was set up by Mr. Sugiura of "Art Tech," a well-known bass maker in the bass world, and the sound is clean and clear in a good sense. This is a precision bass that can be used in the field with high quality materials and high precision modifications.
