Ren Ferguson(Ren Ferguson)
How we met and how we came to be together is really quite simple. It all started when Ren's son happened to find an article we had previously produced and sent us a message.((100th Anniversary Custom SJ-200)
When we asked him about it, he told us that he is now working on his own brand of acoustic guitars after leaving the manufacturer.
It didn't take long for Len's family to connect with us, as we have always been fascinated by his work. Len has a deep love for the instruments he has made, the people he has worked with, the land of Montana, and most of all, his family. He remembers his history as vividly as if it were only yesterday.
We wondered if there was anything we could do to help him, and decided to write an article about his past and future.
Ren FergusonHistory of
-The year is 1946
Born in Detroit, Michigan
-1961.
Len, like many others, began playing guitar with his older brother and friends.
-1962.
In high school, Len's strong fascination with F-style mandolins and ornate carved banjos inspired him to build a "bluegrass banjo" for his younger brother in the school woodworking shop.
Just around that time, he began working at "Westchester Music" near Los Angeles International Airport. There, many instruments that had been damaged in transit by air were brought in and asked for repair estimates. Len was allowed to purchase some of the instruments so damaged, which became the starting point for his career as a repairman.
-Circa 1965-1967.
Len worked for Dobro Guitars (Original Musical Instrument Company (OMI)) as a salesman for the West Coast area, while also building custom inlays.
-1967-1969.
Len enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to a craft ship docked in Yokosuka, Japan.
There he learned advanced skills in machining (machining).
-1969.
After his discharge from the military, he went to work for Westwood Music in Los Angeles, where he worked in sales and repair.
-1970.
I started my own string instrument repair business with Rob Ehlers in Santa Monica, CA.
-1971.
Len moved to Venice Beach, CA and began building banjos.
In addition, along with several apprentices, he started the "Ren FergusonHe also founded a small guitar workshop called "The Guitar Company" with a few apprentices.
-In 1976
The company closed its workshop and he moved to Colorado.
-1979.
Len and his wife Renee moved to Big Timber, Montana, where he began his life as a trapper.
-1983~.
Len took a job as a gun stocker at Shiloh Sharps, where he built the first 1,000 rifles. The company's owner, Wolfgang Droege, was an accomplished machinist and tool designer.
Sharing his skills with Len, he encouraged Len to design jigs to improve manufacturing and assembly accuracy.
-June 1985~.
I worked as a product manager and designer for Flatiron Mandolin Company, where I was involved in the manufacture of mandolins.
-February 1987
Flatiron Mandolin Company was acquired by Gibson and began supplying instruments as an OEM customer.
-March 1989
The company began designing fixtures for the new factory and built prototype guitars for testing.
-1996~.
Master Builder for Gibson, overseeing warranty service, custom design, and tooling design.
Developed one-of-a-kind, elite creations, including reissues of the "Custom Line" and all "Historic Line" guitars.
-December 2011.
Retired from Gibson Corp. The Custom Shop had moved the majority of its manufacturing to the Gibson factory floor. With the help of Val Borriso and Jason Jones, we were no longer allowed to build our own one-of-a-kind guitars. To add insult to injury, shortly after returning from a trip to Japan (in October), he was injured while hunting and suffered a three month total recovery. 66 years old, he decided that he might have a chance (retirement) to work again at home.
-January 2012.
After retiring from Gibson and briefly attempting to retire, Larry Thomas, then president of Fender, contacted Ren and asked him to further improve Guild products Ren accepted the offer and became chief engineer of Fender's Acoustic Division. He continued to work extensively both at the Guild factory in New Hartford, Connecticut, and at the Fender factory in Ensenada, Mexico, designing instruments, improving manufacturing processes, and designing decorative components and models. He also built signature models for Guild, then a subsidiary of Fender.
At the time, a venture capital group purchased Fender. The decision was made to sell the Guild brand and close the New Hartford factory.
-July 2014.
The new owners of Cordoba/Guild approached Len about the duties of building a new factory in Oxnard, California. Len, along with his wife Renee and son Timothy, moved to California to begin rehabilitating the new plant.
-January 2017.
Len was hired as a consultant for Shadow Electronics in China, a company that was looking to open a state-of-the-art acoustic guitar manufacturing plant.
-2019-.
He has been working on his own brand "Ren FergusonCompany (Ren Ferguson Co.) was re-launched.
Together with his children, Virginia and Timothy, he combines the creativity and passion he has developed over the years to create custom models.
Ren FergusonWorks of
George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ron Wood, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Doyle Dykes, Sheryl Crow, and many other notable musicians,Ren FergusonThe guitars produced by the company have been used by many famous musicians.
Len describes his roots as follows
My mother opened the door to the world of art for me when I was very young. She was an artist, a draftsman, and a sculptor. She encouraged me to try everything. I had the opportunity to visit museums all over California and was inspired by the different artists and crafts I met there. From an early age, the questions of how things are made and why they are decorated the way they are have haunted me ever since. I have tried to reproduce and imitate everything from indigenous artworks with practical functions to the artistic decoration found on everyday objects from the late 18th and 19th centuries."
Influenced by numerous works of art, his guitars are more than mere musical instruments; they are works of art with musical functionality and beauty.
We at Advance Guitars are among those who have had the pleasure of owning one of his guitars.
This time, we would like to introduce you toRen FergusonWe would like to take a look back at his past works, and also to get closer to the charm of his guitars with his own comments, which we received specially for this article.
GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90034043 JACARANDA
"This is one of the four guitars made for the 1994 NAMM show.
In the early 1970s, he cut out his own Brazilian rosewood (hakaranda) at his small guitar workshop in Venice Beach, California. He still had some of the wood from that time on hand, so he selected a set from it for this guitar.
Based on the sketches I had made, I tried to compose the decorative elements by combining inspiration from everyday "objects" such as floral arrangements, chair fabric, wallpaper, oriental rugs, and coffee cups. Although they were seemingly disparate, they were strangely connected somehow and eventually came together in a very organic form."

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90074036 BIRD'S EYE MAPLE
"This beautiful SJ-200, made of bird's eye maple and Sitka spruce, was one of four made to be exhibited at the 1994 Winterum.
At that time, the decision was made to produce it in a cranberry red color with sparkle binding, and the cherry sunburst finish on the body was applied by Van Feldner, who painted over it until it was perfect. For the inlays, we used only selected gold-colored mother-of-pearl for all the decorations."
※Van Feldner
Skilled Painter.
Nitro cellulose lacquer, the foundation of Gibson acoustic guitars, is finished using traditional techniques used by successive generations of Gibson builders. His touch of sunburst, in particular, has earned him a worldwide reputation for excellence and beauty.
The tried-and-true, uncompromising finish of this work would have a profound influence on his later career.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104001 CURLY KOA
"When the wood arrived from my supplier, I had the opportunity to select a set of curly koa, all cut from the same tree. It was like an invitation I couldn't refuse. The tropical landscape inlay of mother-of-pearl and avalon, starting at the bridge and tracing down to the headstock, looks to me like a 'Hawaiian rainforest'."

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104024 ZIRICOTE
"For this J-200, I wanted to give the body back and sides two-tone accents in light and dark, and came up with a design I named 'Black Hills Gold Sparkle'. It goes very well with Ziricote. The inspiration for this piece came from an idea I got from an Art Nouveau era book I own. Incorporating the letter "G" into the design was as much fun as drawing the motif of smoke billowing up the fretboard. Not only is this guitar one of my own favorites, but master inlay artist Larry Robinson told me it was his favorite as well! The neck heel carving is also done in the artistic style that flourished in the early 20th century. The beautiful translucent tobacco brown sunburst finish is by Van Feldner."

※Black Hills
A mountainous area on the border of South Dakota and Wyoming in the United States.
It is famous for Mount Rushmore National Monument, where the faces of four U.S. presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) are carved on the mountain face.
The beautiful mountain scenery of light and shadow is beautifully expressed by the giricote and sparkle binding on this SJ-200.
※Art Nouveau
An art style that was widely popular in Europe from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
When Japan opened its borders to the West and Japanese art (ukiyoe, etc.) and crafts became known in the West, "Japonisme" became popular, and its unique aesthetic sensibility became a focal point for those seeking new artistic expression in the West. It is said that Art Nouveau was nurtured in the midst of this trend, and Japanese art was seen as an important source of inspiration in the formation of Art Nouveau.
GIBSON J-200 "SPARKLE SUNBURST" '91 #19910006
"This was the first guitar I was allowed to personally build for Gibson to showcase at the annual winter NAMM show. All materials used were sourced within Gibson and this was also the first guitar I co-built that Henry Jaskiewicz (then CEO of Gibson) allowed me to build.
I call this guitar "Chrysanthemum. It is one of many flowers I like to choose, and I stylized it into the design. This guitar was one of the first in what would later become the "Master Museum Series". For the binding, I used the original gold sparkle that I usually make for myself for use in banjo restorations.
This guitar was scheduled to be sold at the NAMM show, but was actually purchased the night before. This instrument and all subsequent guitars were displayed and sold at the NAMM Show until the early 2000s. The sunburst finish on this guitar was also done by Van Feldner and it was just amazing. It was a real pleasure working with him. He is a true artist and a great friend!"

GIBSON J-200 CELEBRITY '85 #8210558
"This instrument was one of the last models built just prior to the complete removal of the acoustic department from the Nashville factory. At the time, it was necessary to free up space in the acoustic department to expand production of the Les Paul, which was in high demand. Henry Jaskiewicz, along with two associates, acquired the Gibson brand in the mid-1980s, and this instrument was probably built just before or just after that acquisition. The actual date of manufacture is not known, nor do I know if the Julian date system was used at that time. However, these instruments are usually considered to be among the highest quality made at the Nashville factory. In addition, those guitars were built before I began my involvement with Gibson in 1987."

Ren FergusonWhat do you think of the wonderful guitars that have been produced by
His deep knowledge of art and aesthetics allows his instruments to captivate people all over the world.
It was a precious experience for me to be able to touch a part of it this time.
As mentioned above, starting in 2019, Len will be launching his own brand, "Ren FergusonCompany (Ren Ferguson Co.) in 2019.
It is remarkable that he has left a major manufacturer and is still producing top-quality guitars without being restricted by his status.
It is as if a musician who has achieved mass success has gone back to his roots, and has accomplished the task of leaving behind for the world the work he has been pursuing.
What kind of works will he produce in the future?
ADVANCE GUITARS went to the U.S. and had a chance to see the guitars that he is making now.
Stay tuned for the next article.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my sincere respect to Ren, Timothy and Virginia Ferguson, and their families for giving us this opportunity.
