Gibsonとしては初めてとなるスクウェア・ショルダー・モデルであるHummingbirdがリリースされたのが1960年。Martinのドレッドノウトに比べて一回り大きいボディ・シェイプのHummingbirdの基本仕様は、スプルース・トップ、ホンジュラス・マホガニー・サイド＆バック、マホガニー1ピース・ネック、ショート・スケール、トップ・ベリー・ブリッジ、アジャスタブル・サドル、ダブル・パラレログラム・ポジションマーク（平行四辺形）、クラウン・ヘッドストック・インレイ、ハカランダ指板、そしてトレードマークの"ハチ鳥"を刻み込んだピックガード。この斬新なルックスかつダイナミックなサウンドが当時のミュージシャンの圧倒的な支持を受け、その爆発的なヒットが'62年のDoveの発表へと繋がっていく。ただ、DoveはHummingbirdに比べて、値段が35%高かったことから、人気の的はHummingbirdに集中。Doveの生産を実売よりも多くしていたGibson社が、生産の追いつかなくなったHummingbirdのラインにDoveのボディを追加、'62年と'63年にはロング・スケールでメイプル・サイド＆バックのHummingbirdを造ってしまったという逸話もある。実にGibsonらしい話だが、そのメイプル・ボディのHummingbirdは現在ではプレミアの付くレア・アイテムとなっている。
