Gibsonフラット・トップAG特集 - TC楽器 - TCGAKKI

Gibson flat-top acoustic guitars have gained overwhelming presence and popularity, and are now split in popularity between Gibson and Martin.
The various famous models that have appeared as a result of trial and error and overcoming the harsh conditions of wartime are truly the history of the flat-top guitar.
Produced by the Montana Factory Team led by master luthier Len Ferguson, the current models have been reaffirmed for their high quality.
Gibson's attitude of skillfully carrying on the traditions of the good old days with a hint of vintage flavor, including reissued models that remind us of the good old days and new models that meet the needs of today, is truly wonderful.
We hope that you will take this opportunity to reaffirm the reason for the popularity of the Gibson flat-top while unraveling its 80-odd years of history.

J-45 & J-50

The J-45 was introduced in 1942 as the successor to the J-35 (produced since 1936), but due to the shortage of supplies caused by World War II, the J-35, J-55, and SJ-100 were discontinued in 1942, and the SJ-200, the flagship model of the time, was discontinued in 1943. The L-00, LG-2, SJ, and J-45 were born to replace them. However, by the end of the war in 1946, the J-45 was forced to undergo numerous changes.

At the time of production, the J-45 had a J-35-style flamed celluloid pickguard and multiple binding on the top and back. The very first ones had a metal truss rod, but due to a lack of metal, it was replaced by an ebony rod, and the adjustable cover was also gone. The following year, in '43, a severe shortage of spruce led to a four-piece top, and a skunk stripe was added to cover the poor appearance of the top. Around '45, the all-mahogany top and five-piece maple neck with walnut sandwiched between side and back maple plywood were also produced.

Later, in 1947, soon after the end of the war, a natural top J-50 was released, and as can be seen from the fact that a variety of high-quality spruce and other woods became available, the transition of the J-45 was settled for the time being.

From 1942 to 1946, the J-45 was styled with a script head logo with a "Only a Gibson is Good Enough" banner, round shoulders, teardrop (small) pickguard, and straight bridge, but in the '50s and '50s, a revolutionary change occurred. In the '50s, however, an epochal change came. The first change was to a new bridge design called the "top belly bridge." In 1955, the pickguard was changed to a large pickguard, and the total number of frets was increased from 19 to 20. In addition, the bracing was changed from scalloped to non-scalloped. In '62, the soundhole purfling was changed from one ring to two rings, and in '65, the head angle was reduced from 17 to 14 degrees. And '68 was the last year of the round shoulder, a major feature of the J-45 & J-50.

Southern Jumbo & Country Western

The Southern Jumbo was introduced in 1942 as the top-of-the-line model of the time (the Super Jumbo was discontinued due to the war), replacing the J-55, the top model of the J series.

It was built with the best materials available at the time, and was appropriately named "Southern Jumbo" ("Southern" in the U.S. is said to evoke "tradition," "romance," and "nostalgia"), but its body size was almost the same as that of the Advanced Jumbo.

The Southern Jumbo, which is known as a favorite of Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie, is used by Masayoshi Yamazaki in Japan, which has brought it into the spotlight among young Japanese, and it now reigns as the second most popular model after the J-45.

The Country Western was born in 1960 as a natural finish model of the Southern Jumbo.
Like the Southern Jumbo, it has mahogany sides and back, double parallelogram position marks, and the natural color of the top gives it a rustic feel, unlike the sunburst. From '63, the round shoulder was changed to a square shoulder, the pickguard was specified as a 3-pointed type similar to that of Hummingbird, and in '69, the top belly bridge was changed to the bottom.' After '61, there were a few models with cherry wood ornaments. Production was temporarily discontinued in 1978, but today, the model is produced as a reissue and Cheryl Crow signature, and is still very popular today as a model that exudes a rustic flavor.

J-200 & J-160E

Jumbo 200, nicknamed "King of Flat Top".
The Super Jumbo was born in 1937. The Super Jumbo was born in 1937, when cowboy star Ray Whitley and Gibson's Guy Hart met at the Madison Square Garden Rodeo, and Ray suggested that they build a guitar with an ultra-funky, ultra-country design, Later, it was used by famous country singers such as Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and Jimmy Wakely, and quickly became a popular model in the Gibson flat-top world. In 1939, the SJ-200 was officially named the "Super Jumbo 200" due to its $200 list price at the time, and about 100 were produced until 1942.

After the war, it was re-released as the "J-200" in 1946. One of the main features is that the prewar model had rosewood sides and back, while the postwar model has maple sides and back. (Only two maple side & back models were produced by custom order before the war.) In '48, natural color was introduced, the peg head was single-layer cell binding, the body thickness was increased from 4 1/2" to 4 2/3" after '49, 4 7/8" in '52, and 4 7/8" in the mid-60s. In the mid-'60s, the body thickness became 5 inches.
It was used not only by country artists but also by legendary artists such as Elvis Presley and Keith Richards, and is still popular as Gibson's high-end model.

The J-160E was released in 1954 as an acoustico following the CF-100E.
It is so famous that John Lennon used it for many years, and it was originally produced for country and western music. The instrument is a historical gem that successfully combines live sound and electric tone.

Dove & Hummingbird

The Hummingbird, Gibson's first square-shoulder model, was released in 1960, and its basic specifications are as follows: spruce top, Honduran mahogany sides and back, one-piece mahogany neck, short scale, and top belly. The basic specifications are spruce top, Honduran mahogany sides and back, one-piece mahogany neck, short scale, top belly bridge, adjustable saddle, double parallelogram position marks, crown headstock inlays, hakaranda fretboard, and the trademark " The pickguard is engraved with the trademark "Hachitaro". This innovative look and dynamic sound were overwhelmingly supported by the musicians of the time, and its explosive success led to the release of the Dove in 1962. However, since the Dove was 35% more expensive than the Hummingbird, its popularity was focused on the Hummingbird, and Gibson, which had been producing more Doves than it actually sold, added the Dove body to the Hummingbird line, which it could no longer keep up with production. In '62 and '63, Gibson made a long scale Hummingbird with maple side and back. The maple-bodied Hummingbird is now a rare item that commands a premium.

Small Body

The L-0, introduced in 1926, and the small-body L-1, which was a departure from the traditional archtop guitars, were the first Gibson flat-top acoustic guitars. This was followed by Gibson's first artist model, the Nick Lucas in 1928, the L-2 in 1929, and the L-00 in 1932. The neck joint was shifted to the current standard 14 frets, and the L-Century with pearloid fingerboard, released as a commemorative model for the Chicago Centennial in 1933, was the last of the body sizes to be mainstreamed by the J-series models.

The history of the small body resumed with the LG-2 released in 1942, followed by the LG-3 in 1946, the LG-3 in 1946, and the LG-3 in 1967. The LG series was followed by the LG-3 in '46 and the LG-1 in '47. The LG series had a body shape similar to that of a classic guitar and a 14-fret joint neck. The LG series was followed by the LG-3 in '47 and the LG-1 in '47, all mahogany models with a body shape similar to that of a classic guitar and a 14-fret joint neck. After the release of the all-mahogany LG-0 model in 1958, which featured even simpler decoration, the series was succeeded by the B series starting with the B-25 released in 1962.

The Gibson small body is closely associated with the beginning of the history of flat-top acoustic guitars. With its excellent fit and moderate volume, this guitar has gained strong popularity as a guitar for blues and light chord work.
