tone-bender-mki-wooden-case
TONE BENDER (MkI/Wooden Case)

This is a wooden tone bender by Gary Hurst, of which there are said to be around 10 prototypes!

The tone bender is the Gibson Maestro Fuzz-Tone.BassThis pedal is comprised of a circuit equipped with three transistors that have been redesigned to be identical to the original. Even today, countless replicas are made, and it has had a major influence on fuzz pedals and other pedals of the future.Engineer Gary Hurst began making and selling these in the summer of 1965.The first examples were housed in a wooden case said to have been made by his brother, but this was a prototype and later a gold-finished folding steel case was used.

Size: 20 x 15 x 5(cm)
Weight: Approximately 275g (very light for a pedal)
The material is unknown, but the wood grain is clearly visible and it is very light. It is not exactly the kind of quality you would expect from wood. However, it has an outstanding presence!First of all, I was surprised at how precisely the dimensions of the case were: 20cm, 15cm, and 5cm.It's unpainted and has no logos or anything, giving it the warmth that's unique to wood. The case is held together with wooden pegs, and the top surface where the parts are assembled is almost impossible to see in detail unless it's completely disassembled. Therefore, it was quite difficult to photograph the inside. The battery cover, which includes the foot switch, is secured with four wood screws, and can be opened and closed by removing these screws. There is a steel plate on the back of the battery cover for reinforcement, but it loosens slightly when you turn the switch on and off, so I was worried it might crack.I've seen images of the unit with silver knobs, but this one has black plastic ones. The surface is smooth and polished to a pleasant touch. It is simply constructed from thin pieces of wood, so it is delicate and fragile, requiring great care when handling.

The level is quite loud, and distortion begins at about 9 o'clock on the ATTACK (right) control. Turning it further doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Turning it all the way up produces a head-piercing, impactful fuzz sound. The sound from the front pickup in particular is sweet and mild, with a real organic nuance that transports players back to the music scene of the 1960s. The gain and sustain are ample, and the clear, gated, crunchy sound left a lasting impression. I've played many MkI replica models, but this one's sound is clearly a cut above those. It responds extremely well to guitar volume controls, and the bell-like clean-to-crunch sound you get when you turn it all the way down is absolutely sublime. I've never experienced anything better! (Note: Because it uses germanium transistors, I've noticed that the gated feel becomes even stronger in very cold temperatures.)

The column by our staff member Sano isHerefrom.

Era: 1960s

Accessories: None

in charge : Sano (Sano)

※The warranty period begins from the date of purchase1It will be months.

[Currently purchasing(Trade-in)We're currently strengthening our efforts!
