This unit is from the very end of the large-case production run, featuring the specifications just before the transition to the small-case model, commonly known as the RAT I (the very earliest versions had a black-and-white inverted logo!!). The rugged, no-frills chassis exudes a unique vibe.The LM308N op-amp was consistently used from the RAT’s inception through the RAT II around the year 2000. While Motorola LM308Ns were also used in the RAT I, the large-chassis era appears to have been limited to National Semiconductor versions. Although the basic design remains the same, you can sense differences in tone and texture depending on the era.Compared to the late 1980s RAT I, the distortion has a slightly finer texture and a smoother sound. The legendary Jeff Beck has been using it since the large-case model first appeared. The battery holder, which is often missing from other units, is still intact, and of course, the powerful sound is absolutely outstanding!
