This is a Fuzz Face pedal equipped with the "BC183L" from the late 1960s to early 1970s!
The uniquely shaped Fuzz Face, which first appeared in late 1966, is a model whose sound varies greatly depending on the year and individual units. Initially, it used the germanium transistor "NKT275," but in the late 1960s, the specifications were changed to the silicon transistor "BC183L," followed by the "BC108" (although the BC109 and BC183KA have also been confirmed). It was available in several colors, and some had shallower and deeper housings. In 1968, Arbiter merged with Dallas Music, known for the Rangemaster, and the name became "DALLAS-ARBITER ENGLAND." It was then acquired by CBS in 1975.
This unit, manufactured under the name "DALLAS-ARBITER ENGLAND," is believed to date to the late 1960s to early 1970s, when the transition from germanium transistors to silicon transistors occurred. The "BC183L"-equipped unit is also famous for being a favorite of Eric Johnson.
Turning up the FUZZ control transforms the pedal from a crisp, thick boost/overdrive range to a sustained distortion/fuzz sound with added harmonics. The bright clean sound produced by turning down the guitar volume is truly exquisite. While the "NKT275" specification is considered the best Marshall booster, this pedal offers a more aggressive drive sound and is therefore more versatile. Compared to germanium transistors, which are susceptible to temperature and humidity, this pedal offers a stable sound with peace of mind. The anchor bolts (set screws) on this pedal are fixed to the housing, and the lid is now secured with a nut, but this does not affect operation.
