This is an early third model from the mid-1970s, during the transition period from the "2nd/Rams Head" model.
This is an early third-generation model manufactured during the transition period from the second-generation "Ram's Head" model. Units from the early third generation (1976–early 1977) share nearly identical specifications with the late Ram's Head period, featuring the EH3003 (PCB) model number, discrete circuitry, and a power ON-OFF switch. The DC jack is a new addition. From late 1977 to around 1979, the circuit adopted an operational amplifier IC, and the ON-OFF switch was replaced with a TONE-BYPASS switch. The model numbers include EH-3003, inherited from the Ram's Head period, and EH1322, specific to the third generation. Around 1980, the circuit reverted to discrete components in the EH3034 model. Concurrently, the knob design was changed from a chicken head shape to a barrel shape. The gritty, grainy distortion and the sustain with a crisp, well-defined tone remain intact. The TONE control, which is a hallmark of the BIG MUFF's unique character, allows for a wide range of tonal adjustments, from low-boosted sounds to extreme treble-boosted sounds. Although there is no TONE-BYPASS switch, even with intermediate settings, the sound remains thick and never hollow. The sound, which combines intensity with stickiness and depth, is unique to vintage muff pedals.
