In the 1960s, due to restrictions on Brazilian rosewood exports, it became difficult to obtain materials for the 2-piece back of the Doretto model. Therefore, a three-piece back model was developed that could be made without large pieces of wood, and the Martin D-35 was introduced in 1965.
*Incidentally, the idea came from Bob Johnson of Martin's computer department. He was an amateur at making guitars, so at first he was vehemently opposed to the idea, but when he tried it, he found that it sounded great!
The D-35 is famous overseas for being used by the famous guitarist Rory Gallagher. In Japan, it has been used by Takuro Yoshida, Kenji Endo, Tadahide Yoshikawa, Iruka, and many others in the folk scene. The well-controlled vibration of the backboard and the gorgeous appearance of the neck binding were also factors in its popularity.
This 1972 D-35 has some bridge repair work and a pickguard replacement, but it still has the grain, balance, and dry vintage sound characteristic of the D-35! Recommended for those who are looking for an early 70's model that is becoming rare!
