"KING OF THE FLAT-TOPS" 1940 Original SJ-200
Gibson / 1940 SJ-200
The J-200, hailed as the "King of Flat-Tops," reigns supreme as Gibson's flagship model to this day.
Its origins trace back to 1937, when Gibson collaborated with Ray Whitley, a popular Western film actor and singer, to develop a jumbo-sized guitar. This led to the introduction of the SUPER JUMBO "200" in 1938.
The King of Acoustic Guitars, beloved by countless musicians including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones), gracing legendary stages.
This newly arrived piece is an original 1940 SJ-200.
Only 96 original SJ-200s were manufactured between 1938 and 1941, making it an extremely rare model, comparable to the 91 pre-war D-45s.

This particular instrument features rosewood sides and back, characteristic of pre-war specifications, along with an ebony mustache bridge equipped with individually adjustable saddles for each string—a distinctive specification.

Close inspection reveals a pickguard pattern typical of the late 1950s, and the body top's bracing structure suggests it was retopped at the factory during the 1950s.
Today, even a 1950s J-200 is a precious vintage piece.
This combination, nearly impossible to achieve today, underscores just how special and luxurious this particular instrument is.

The headstock gleams with a script logo and crown inlay,
while the back of the headstock, featuring a stinger design, houses Kluson Seal-Fast tuners with substantial peg buttons.

The crowning touch is the strap pin mounting hardware on the headstock and body end. This too is the original pre-war SJ-200 specification, and such vintage parts allow you to fully appreciate its charm.

A vintage masterpiece accessible only to a select few.
In terms of sound, it's a truly remarkable guitar that delivers an immense volume, setting it apart from the post-reproduction J-200.
